We are going Food Safety Management – ISO 22000:2005

“A dream is just a dream.
A goal is a dream with a plan and a deadline.” (Harvey Mackay)

We have flown our ISO 9001:2008 Quality Management System flag so proudly and so high and have won accolades too! Well done team Tsebo. It is now time for us as Tsebo to grow and spread our wings and say goodbye to the Quality Management System and embrace the Food Safety Management System, ISO 22000:2005.

Our journey began in April 2013, when trainers from the Corporate Training & Quality Assurance and Hygiene & Safety processes went to the Standards Association of Zimbabwe’s Training Centre to learn the ins and outs of ISO 22000:2005. As the Latin phrase says,

“Qui docet discit” “who teaches learns”

Awareness training for the group began in May 2013. The first participants were Tsebo’s senior managers and directors, including the Managing Director, as aptly put:

“When the Leader gets up and starts walking, the people will get up and start walking with him/her.” (Bob Mischler, Engineering Manager, Ottowa – 29 May 2009).

To date the walk has begun and 90% of the organisation has gone through the Awareness Training and is using some of the ISO 22000:2005 terms such as hazard, risk, validation and preventive action, to name but a few as the list is endless.

We are aware that ISO 22000:2005 is based on four very important pillars, that is:

• Interactive Communication
• System Management
• Prerequisite Programs and
• HACCP Principles

As such, active communication with all involved in the food chain will be the order of the day to ensure food safety is understood and controls put in place to eliminate or minimise hazards “from farm to fork”.

In order to achieve our dream we have set goals and targets, some stretch targets but we believe, in the Year 2014 Food Safety will be our prime concern.
